Solutions

Southern Africa faces a complex energy challenge

This is driven by:

Load shedding and unreliable power supply, affecting business continuity, telecom uptime and essential services.

Volatile oil and gas markets, increasing the cost and uncertainty of diesel-based backup generation.

Network reliance and grid constraints, limiting dependable access to power for commercial, industrial and community users.

Remote and underserved communities, where weak-grid or off-grid conditions restrict economic activity and access to essential services.

Rising demand for bankable renewable infrastructure, requiring projects that are commercially structured, technically reliable and capable oflong-term operation.

SouthGrid delivers renewable energy solutions across five priority areas, each designed to address a clear power need across Southern Africa. Our solutions support telecom infrastructure, commercial and industrial energy users, utility-scale generation, grid reliability and rural electrification. Each offering has a defined customer segment, revenue model and delivery pathway.

How We Deliver

We are driven by a belief in the future of our continent and in the power of clean energy to unlock opportunity for people, communities, and industry.

SouthGrid follows a disciplined four-stage delivery model: end-to-end project development, strategic financial structuring, full construction management and integrated energy delivery. We use this approach because renewable energy projects must be commercially viable, technically sound ,safely delivered and capable of long-term operation from the outset. We Identify-> Structure -> Partner -> Finance -> Deliver -> Operate and Support.

Can switching to renewable energy improve financial performance?

In many cases, yes. However, at SouthGrid, we believe savings are not automatic; they are engineered. A well-structured renewable energy solution is a commercial asset that provides:

Cost Predictability: Improved long term forecasting through fixed-cost generation.
Reduced OpEx: Lower exposure to volatile grid tariffs and demand charges.
Operational Efficiency: Enhanced performance via smart energy management systems.

The SouthGrid Approach: We assess each opportunity on its technical and commercial merits, providing transparent cashflow modelling so clients understand both the value case and the long term investment proposition (IRR and Yield).

What types of renewable energy solutions does SouthGrid offer?

SouthGrid develops and operates integrated renewable energy infrastructure for telecom, commercial, industrial, institutional, utility-scale and community energy users. Our five priority offerings are:

Telecom Tower Hybrid Power Systems: Solar PV, battery storage and backup generation systems for telecom towers, designed to reduce diesel use and improve site uptime.

Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Solar + Storage: Behind-the-meter rooftop, ground-mounted and carport solar PV systems with battery storage for factories, mines, warehouses, logistics sites and institutions.

Utility-Scale Solar PV Plants: Large ground-mounted solar farms designed to supply electricity to utilities, large corporates or contracted energy buyers through long-term power purchase arrangements.

Grid-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Standalone or solar-coupled battery systems that support grid stability, peak demand management, backup power and energy shifting.

Solar Mini-Grids for Rural Electrification: Community-scale solar and battery systems designed to provide reliable electricity to underserved areas, small businesses and essential services.

What financing options are available?

We work with clients to structure solutions aligned with their capital strategy and risk appetite:

• CAPEX Purchase: Direct ownership to capture full upside and tax benefits (e.g., depreciation).

• Operating Lease / PPA: Third-party ownership where the client pays for energy generated, preserving capital for core business operations.

• Hybrid Models: Blended equity/debt or co-investment structures for large strategic projects.

• Green Finance: Support for sustainability linked loans and ESG reporting requirements.

How long does it take to complete a project?

Project timelines follow a disciplined development pathway. We prioritise programme certainty through early risk identification and staged gating. Typically:

• Small Commercial Solar (<500kW), 3 to 6 months - Key Variables: Site readiness, approvals, equipment lead times.

• Medium Industrial/Hybrid (500kW to 5MW), 6 to 12 months - Key Variables: Grid studies, engineering complexity, procurement.

• Large-Scale/Strategic (>5MW), 12 to 24 months, - Key Variables: Environmental assessments, financing, staged commissioning.

Do you provide maintenance and support after installation?

Yes. Long-term performance is critical to protecting asset value. Our approach treats maintenance as disciplined asset management, typically representing 1 to 2% of CAPEX annually.

• Preventive Maintenance: Scheduled inspections, inverter servicing, and electrical safety checks.

• Performance Monitoring: Real-time data analytics and yield verification against models.

• Operational Oversight: Remote diagnostics, warranty coordination, and lifecycle planning.

How long do solar panels last?

Solar panels are long-life infrastructure assets. High quality modules typically feature a 10 to 15 year product warranty and a 25 to 30 year performance warranty (guaranteeing 80 to 87% of original output). With proper management, a practical lifespan exceeds 30 years.

How does a solar power system work?

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system converts sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity, which is then inverted to alternating current (AC) for on-site use or grid export. While the tech is simple, the value lies in operational strategy: right sizing generation to load and ensuring resilience during grid disturbances. Key components:

• PV modules (panels) capturing solar irradiance

• Inverters converting DC to usable AC power

• Mounting structures, cabling, protection devices

• Optional: battery storage, energy management software, grid interface equipment

Will solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes. Solar panels continue to generate electricity in cloudy conditions, although output is typically lower than during full sunlight. Modern systems are engineered to perform across a range of environmental conditions, with overall results influenced by system design, equipment quality, orientation and shading. A well planned installation remains a reliable long-term energy asset in diverse climates.
